Additional Health Coverage

A health insurance program typically includes physical and mental health programs. Basic coverage includes visits to generalists and specialists.

In addition to the standard coverage, ask a health insurance plan what additional coverage can be purchased. These types of add-ons raise the rate, but could be worth it to employers. For example, typical question to pose to a prospective health insurer include:

  • Is vision covered? What is covered - eye exam, glasses, contacts, laser vision correction or other procedures?
  • Can a dental plan be linked to medical coverage or does it have to be bought separately?
  • Are reproductive services, such as artificial insemination, included or available as an option?
  • Is there any disease-specific coverage or programs for cancer, heart disease or other illnesses?
  • How is addiction/substance abuse covered?
  • How is physical therapy part of the plan’s medical coverage?
  • Does this plan qualify for a health savings account?
